It’s really frustrating if you lost the password for your Windows system or you change it and not able to remember the new password, which happened to me couple of times. For non techie people, there is no option but to reinstall the whole operating system as they don’t know any other option to recover the lost windows login password. But there are ways using which you can retrieve the lost windows login password without installing Windows. Just follow these steps -
1> Enter your Windows XP CD the boot your PC. Remember to change the boot sequence at BIOS and set CD as the first option
2> Now on reboot the installation screen appears and it will start setup files. After it completes press F8 to continue and choose REPAIR option by pressing R.
3> Now the Repair process will take few minutes and then it will reboot the system.
4> After this, at the bottom left of installation screen you will get the process is Installing Devices. Press SHIFT+F10.
5> You will get a Command Prompt and type NUSRMGR.CPL the hit enter. It will bring up a screen with user accounts.
6> Now, simply select and change the password of the account you need and exit the command prompt.
7> Next the process may ask you for the XP CD Key, enter and continue login to your system with the new password. It will keep all existing settings of your previously installed Windows.
Ideally, whoever you change the password, just write it in a pace of paper in different order adding few characters and numbers to it so others can not get the original password from it but you can.
