Why Kallang Gas Works Land need to decontaminated

I was at URA on the first day of the exhibition and had also asked the officers the same question but I got a different answer. The answer I got was that the Kallang Gas Works site is still contaminated after more than 130 years of operation. The soil needs to be "decontaminated" to ensure there is no environmental pollution when they start digging for construction. It might be a long time before anything can be built there so our views should be safe for a while as no plot ratio is decided yet and the land is only marked as "reserved" just like the old master plan. No wonder the authorities have started planting a forest of young trees there recently.

The other thing I found out is that top priority for the redevelopment of Kallang might possibly be the eastern part of the Kallang Riverside with second-level bridges linking the Kallang MRT to the future Sports Hub. This is to coincide with the opening of the Sports Hub in 2012. Most of the offices/commercial, hotel and retail developments would be at this section.

The Kampong Bugis area (closer to and facing Citylights) would be mostly residential with some retail at street level. I believe only the section nearer the Kallang Riverfront and around The Riverine condo would be developed first because the Kallang Gas Works land is still contaminated and not "plan-able" as seen in the draft Master Plan 2008. However, I think that might not stop them from developing "The Green", a linear park to provide easier access from the Lavender MRT to the Kallang Riverfront by cutting through parts of the Kallang Gas Works land.
